"TALKS WITHOUT FRONTIERS" with Dr. Marie Imbrova, Prague Municipal Library, Marianske namesti, Prague 1, November 23, 2009


The International Czech Club in cooperation with the Municipal Library in Prague has organized on Monday, November 23, from 5 p.m. "TALKS WITHOUT FRONTIERS" with Dr. Marie Imbrova and her guest Mrs. Ivana Weberova, photographer.

During her work for the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Zimbabwe, Dr. Marie Imbrova has visited the Tengenenge Art Colony near a stone mine, where the amazing art pieces are originating."This place is also assigning the destiny of all children born in Tengenenge. They know only the stone, they are living with stone and working with stone. There is no school, shop, there is no available doctor and the connection with the world doesn't function." says Marie Imbrova, who after spending there three years, now from distance too, is making efforts to improve the conditions for these children.

The meeting with the projection was moderated by Mrs. Martina Fialkova. The programme was realized in the Small Hall in the lower basement of the Prague Municipal Library, Marianske namesti, Prague 1.

The journal "Czech Dialogue (Cesky Dialog)" was prepared for all interested persons. The calendar, postcards and bead ornamental fittings from Zimbabwe were offered for sale in favour of the Tengenenge Community.

November 2009

Exhibition "ADVENTURE IN ZIMBABWE", Barendrecht, Netherlands, November 2009


Dr. Marie Imbrova, as a former Chargé d'Affaires of the Czech Republic to Zimbabwe and as a member of the Foundation Barendrecht - Louny 2002, initiated and organized this small exhibition of six different Zimbabwean artists from the Tengenenge Sculpture Community in Barendrecht in cooperation with André Nijenhuis Art Gallery, Barendrecht Library and sculptor Mr. Jos Horsman.


This exhibition attracted visitors´ attention to the artists' fate in Tengenenge, where the situation is far from being rosy.

The official opening of the exhibition took place on Monday, November 2 at 8 p.m.

September 2009


Second, African Baptism of the book "SPIRIT OF A WOMAN - a journey through the sculpture of Lazarus Takawira", Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, September 26, 2009

This book, written by the Australian Mrs. Celia Winter-Irwing with the photos taken by French photographer Mr. Eric Gauss, that was edited and printed in the Czech Republic with the financial support of Dr. Marie Imbrova and the French Institute (Alliance Française) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, was for these reasons baptized two times. The Czech baptism, connected with the exhibition of 15 Takawira's sculptures, took place on the occasion of the inauguration of the Antiquarian Bookshop Fabio and the Emil Julis Gallery's new showrooms in Cerncice u Loun, on June 13, 2009, in the presence of more than 90 notable guests, top representatives of cultural and fine arts institutions.

The second, African baptism of the book
"SPIRIT OF A WOMAN - a journey through the sculpture of Lazarus Takawira" was realized directly in Zimbabwe and namely during the INTWASA Arts Festival in Bulawayo on September 26, 2009. In this case, it was connected with the Dr. Marie Imbrova's lecture on book origination and the presentation of French photographer Eric Gauss's solitary photographs. About one hundred guests from Zimbabwe and South Africa attended this event.

The particular contribution of the official presentation of this book was an agreement on its diffusion in Zimbabwe through the National Gallery in Harare.

Exhibition "AFRICAN SCULPTURES", Castle Pruhonice, September 18 - October 18, 2009

In the days of September 18 - October 18, 2009, it was realized in the Castle Pruhonice near Prague the exhibition "AFRICAN SCULPTURES", organized by the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the exhibitor Mr. Ondrej Homolka, in which Dr. Marie Imbrova participated with some her African sculptures.

The vernissage of the exhibition took place on September 17, 2009 at 5 p.m.

The vernissage of the exhibition of the sculptures of the prominent Zimbabwean sculptor Lazarus Takawira, from Dr. Marie Imbrova´s private collection, named
"LAZARUS TAKAWIRA: SPIRIT OF A WOMAN" and the baptism of the book "SPIRIT OF A WOMAN - a journey through the sculpture of Lazarus Takawira", written by the Australian Mrs. Celia Winter-Irwing with the photos taken by French photographer Mr. Eric Gauss, whose edition and printing in the Czech Republic was personally sponsored by Dr. Marie Imbrova in cooperation with the French Institute (Alliance Française) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, took place in the Emil Julis Gallery, Tylova Street 151, 439 01 Cerncice u Loun, on June 13, 2009.

April 2009

Exhibition of the sculptures of the prominent Zimbabwean sculptor DOMINIC BENHURA, Brussels, Belgium, April 2 - 3, 2009

On the occasion of the "International Colloquium on Culture and Creativity as Vectors of Development" that was organized by the European Union in Brussels in the days of April 2 and 3, 2009, Dr. Marie Imbrova exhibited sculptures of the prominent Zimbabwean sculptor Dominic Benhura from her private collection.

DOMINIC BENHURA (photo on the left) attended this colloquium as well as this exhibition personally. The photo on the right of the French photograper Eric Gauss shows one of the exhibited sculptures of Dominic Benhura "Acrobats", dated 2009.

January - February 2009

Study on "STONE SCULPTURE IN ZIMBABWE" 2009 under the auspices of the European Union, January - February 2009

During January - February 2009, during her stay in Harare, Dr. Marie Imbrova had a share in working up the study on
"STONE SCULPTURE IN ZIMBABWE" that came into existence and was published under the auspices of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Zimbabwe and was presented in the "International Colloquium on Culture and Creativity as Vectors of Development", that was organized by the European Union in Brussels in the days of April 2 and 3, 2009.

The following ones cooperated on the creation of this study: Brothers Bonjisi, Chapungu Gallery, Chitumgwiza Art Centre, Delta Gallery, Dominic Benhura Studio, Friends for Ever, Lazarus Takawira Sculpture Farm, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Nyanga Craft Centre, Tengenenge Art Community.

Eric Gauss photographed the necessary photos for this study.

The special thanks are than are belonging to Domic Benhura for his logistical support, to Elvis Mari from the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe for valuable information on sculpture communities and to other local artists for their support and sharing of information about their lives and conditions.
